My sensitive skin problem…?
Question by : My sensitive skin problem…?
Well, I’m a 17 year old kid (male), and I’ve been struggling with acne throughout highschool and some of middle school. I got help from my dermatologist to get rid of my acne last year, she prescribed me: doxycyclen pills, tretinoin cream, and clindamycin gel. In fact, this did get rid of my acne prone skin – cleaning up my cystic and bumpy acne. But now I face a different problem that is sensitive skin.
Some days my face looks flawless, with a healthy glow, and I feel really good about my skin. But other days, it gets dull, uneven, sometimes blotchy red, etc. I don’t know what I do that causes these, but I really want to know how I can get back to those days where I have really nice looking skin.
Could be vitamin deficiency or an unhealthy diet? I take vitamin in tablet form everyday, and I eat very very healthy. I also drink a lot of water
I use Cetaphil daily facial cleanser for oily to normal skin, so I’m not using any soapy/foamy/dye cleansers.
I tone sometimes and I moisturize after cleansing every time. I use neutrogena healthy skin lotion with SPF 15, and it has a lot of very good antioxidants. I just started using it recently and it’s doing an okay job of diminishing acne/sun spots.
I also have had hive breakouts couple times a week, which I take Claritan for.
Exfoliating can sometimes be to harsh on my skin so I don’t do it often, maybe once a week.
I thought my skin irritation or whatever it is you want to call it was due to shaving my face, but I took extra steps to make sure I always get the best shave, so it’s not that.
I have a tan complexion, but when my face goes into irritation, dulness, blotchiness, uneveness, or whatever – it looks lighter, the skin around my eyes looks darker, my face looks more bumpy, and redness on my cheeks and bearded area.
Can anyone help me figure out why my face tweaks out? I have finally realized that i have sensitive skin, but i really want that skin that i get when it’s at its best (usually once a week or twice). I’ve done trial and error and I can’t figure out what it could be. Any advice would be cool.

Although I never had acne, I did have similar skin sensitivity problems.
First of all stop using anything on your skin that contains petroleum products. Most moisturizers contain them. You can buy pure, raw shea butter on the internet. It usually comes in a tub or something similar. It’s solid but melts at body temperature. Don’t use shea butter products you can buy at any drugstore. They have little shea butter in them but lots of the regular petroleum products. Or you can buy at Sally’s Beauty Supply a product called Hemp Body Moisturizer. It has hemp seed oil (no THC), coconut oil, sesame, jojoba, sunflower, olive, tea tree oils in it and seems to be OK on my face (although it does contain some parabens).
I WANT TO ADD: I find Aveeno Ultra-Calming Foaming cleanser (gently cleans and softens dry, sensitive skin) a good choice with no breakouts.
Even though you like Neutrgena HS maybe you can find SPF 15 in an all vegetable product.
Another product is Aubrey Vegecol with Aloe moisturizing cream for sensitive skin. Great ingredients but it’s a little more expensive. I think they make cleansers as well.
I like Shea the best and it’s cheap.
I also use Cetaphil soap but only on my chin and sides of nose or else I break out on my cheeks.
I take Fish Oil, Vitamin A and Biotin for skin and hair. It made quite a difference. Alpha Lipoic Acid and Co-Q-10 are really good antioxidents.

What’s the deal on antibiotics? Is it harmful if you forgot to follow the schedule on when to take it?
Question by past_present_subsequent: What’s the deal on antibiotics? Is it harmful if you forgot to follow the schedule on when to take it?
Like if it’s required once a day and you missed out on a day? Is it also harmful when you missed applying antibiotic acne ointment for a day when it’s required daily?
Is it because of these concerns that taking antibiotics must be made with caution? If you happen to be a doctor, please append “I’m a doctor.” I’m concerned about the acne treatment i apply on to my face. It’s antibiotic.
Thanks!

Bacterial replicate by dividing themsleves in two. If you start with one, you will soon have 2, then 4, then 8, then 16, then 32, and so on. If you aren’t consistant about taking your antibiotics they will multiply such that when your presciption runs out, some of the bacteria may still be alive to multiply and cause the infection to re-occure.
What’s worse is this surviving bacteria may have adapted to become immune to the same antibiotic. There are many drug resistant strains of bacteria around that antibiotics can no longer treat. These are called super bugs and because of them we are starting to see people die of simple infections which, for a time, were %100 treatable.

Is it bad to take antibiotics for acne?
Question by iHeartyouu.: Is it bad to take antibiotics for acne?
So my dermatologist just put me on Doxycycline, but so many people have been telling me to avoid this in case i got a disease and i would not be immune to it. Also, the side effects are kind of scary too…like the vomiting, depression, yellow teeth…
My dermatologist said she’s been taking this for 22 years, so there are no worries…but after doing some research i was just very curious.

it’s hard to say without knowing how fair any “studies” are. Oftentimes they’re very one-sided to make you, the consumer, choose a product (or choose another one instead).
The best thing to do would be to get a second opinion from another doctor or pharmacist. They know a lot about these medicines and might be able to help you out.
Also, remember that just because one person’s been taking a medication for 22 years doesn’t mean that it’s safe for you. People are all made up differently, so you COULD still have those potential reactions.

Do acne and acne scars eventually go away with birth control?
Question by post.trauma: Do acne and acne scars eventually go away with birth control?
I’ve always had a bit of acne, and I started using ProActiv (which works wonderfully, by the way – leaves my skin feeling very clean and refreshed) and it did clear up noticeably in the time between my periods. Several days before my period I would get annoying zits (the deep kind that hurt to touch), but nothing too bad. I’m in high school – everyone gets acne, right, so what do I care about a couple of zits?
However, I’ve always had moderate acne on my chest and back. Just small ones on my chest that aren’t really noticeable, they’re just small bumps with no noticeable redness, and on my back I’d get a mixture of those with big zits.
I started taking Yasmin28 about three weeks ago, and since I began the acne on my face has been getting a lot worse. Generally I would get zits on my chin and forehead, but since I began taking the pill I’ve been getting acne in places where I’ve NEVER gotten it before – my cheeks, just under my jaw, sometimes even my thighs.
It wouldn’t be a huge deal to me if they just went away, but they don’t. Regardless of whether I pick them or not, they leave red or relatively dark, discoloured marks that don’t go away for what feels like forever. I still have some scattered along my chin from when I first started getting acne a few years ago! I’m not sure if those count as scars, though, so I don’t know if I want to try any Vitamin E oil or cocoa butter (I’ve been told that helps) because I’m scared that will clog my pores and make me break out even more.
I keep hearing that, with birth control, acne gets worse before it gets better, but I’d really like an idea of how long this will take. One girl told me it takes six months, but in other places I’m hearing 2-3 months tops if my acne wasn’t severe before starting the pill.
And I really just feel like I can’t win lately when I wash my face. Wherever I focus on washing (wherever my acne is worst at the time) I start to get zits elsewhere as if to make up for it. >.< For example, if I focus on washing my T-zone, I get acne on my cheeks. It's really annoying. And I don't want to take any antibiotics to help it, because I need my birth control to be as effective as possible.
Any help is intensely appreciated!

3 weeks is not long enough to decide if Yasmin is working for you or not. I would wait at least 3 or 4 months and if you still haven’t seen any improvement you can try switching to another pill. Ortho Tri-Cyclen is supposed to work well for acne.

birth control & acne?
Question by kmk621: birth control & acne?
I started on birth control for acne. If the birth control is going to work, about how long does it take to see results? If I don’t notice a change, how long should I stick with it?
Any particular birth controls that worked for you? (I know everyone is different, just interested)

Honestly I’ve been on birth control for over a year now and I haven’t seen a ton of results as far as acne control. I’ve used ortho tri cyclen lo and now I’m on tri sprintec, which is generic which may explain why it’s slightly crappy.
Anyway, I would give it like 3 months to reallyyy see some results. And if you can get brand name even though it’s more expensive, I swear to god it’s more effective for ance!

Recipe suggestions for a hypoglycemic, anemic, vegetarian, acne-prone teenager?
Question by Lucy in the sky…: Recipe suggestions for a hypoglycemic, anemic, vegetarian, acne-prone teenager?
Having made it past the question title, you’ve probably gathered that I follow a somewhat strict diet. I eat well most of the time, and do a decent job addressing my dietary needs, both self-imposed (vegetarianism), and involuntary (hypoglycemia, anemia). I’ve included that I have acne-prone skin because I am a firm believer in a holistic approach in medicine.
Anyway, lately I’ve been in a bit of a culinary rut. I’m cycling through the same set of dishes and am in need of some inspiration. I would greatly appreciate some new recipes and foods to try. Thanks!
Additional info: Age 19, peanut allergy, college student (so preferably nothing too time-consuming or expensive).

You might want to try marinated tofu. The only recipe I have is this one
Baked Marinated Tofu Recipe
1 pound extra-firm tofu
1 cup sesame oil
1/4 cup tamari soy sauce
3 teaspoons paprika
1 tablespoon sesame seeds
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon garlic powder
Slice tofu into 1/4-inch slices. Combine sesame oil, tamari, paprika, sesame seeds, ginger and garlic powder; whisk until well blended. Marinate tofu 2 to 3 hours, or overnight.
Remove tofu from marinade. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes or until done.

How to know what causes acne?

There are not thousands of reasons that can cause acne. I would say that the first reason is cosmetics (acnea cosmetica): make up or cleaner. You can easily know this if it itches right after washing your face or if the breakouts stop if you switch to another foundation or powder. That’s if you use make up. If you don’t then its probably just hormonal, it’s the most common case actually (even for myself x)). In this case you have a tendency of breaking out during your period. But listen, acne is just a phase honey, and i know what im talking about. It’s gonna go with time. Just DONT touch it cause it leaves scares and DONT please DONT waste your money on products that pretend miracles. Wash your face twice a day and moisturize it with good products (I personnal use Clinique) then put your make up on if you do, AND FORGET ABOUT IT.
It’s gonna go I promise
