What’s the deal on antibiotics? Is it harmful if you forgot to follow the schedule on when to take it?
Question by past_present_subsequent: What’s the deal on antibiotics? Is it harmful if you forgot to follow the schedule on when to take it?
Like if it’s required once a day and you missed out on a day? Is it also harmful when you missed applying antibiotic acne ointment for a day when it’s required daily?
Is it because of these concerns that taking antibiotics must be made with caution? If you happen to be a doctor, please append “I’m a doctor.” I’m concerned about the acne treatment i apply on to my face. It’s antibiotic.
Thanks!

Bacterial replicate by dividing themsleves in two. If you start with one, you will soon have 2, then 4, then 8, then 16, then 32, and so on. If you aren’t consistant about taking your antibiotics they will multiply such that when your presciption runs out, some of the bacteria may still be alive to multiply and cause the infection to re-occure.
What’s worse is this surviving bacteria may have adapted to become immune to the same antibiotic. There are many drug resistant strains of bacteria around that antibiotics can no longer treat. These are called super bugs and because of them we are starting to see people die of simple infections which, for a time, were %100 treatable.

Is it bad to take antibiotics for acne?
Question by iHeartyouu.: Is it bad to take antibiotics for acne?
So my dermatologist just put me on Doxycycline, but so many people have been telling me to avoid this in case i got a disease and i would not be immune to it. Also, the side effects are kind of scary too…like the vomiting, depression, yellow teeth…
My dermatologist said she’s been taking this for 22 years, so there are no worries…but after doing some research i was just very curious.

it’s hard to say without knowing how fair any “studies” are. Oftentimes they’re very one-sided to make you, the consumer, choose a product (or choose another one instead).
The best thing to do would be to get a second opinion from another doctor or pharmacist. They know a lot about these medicines and might be able to help you out.
Also, remember that just because one person’s been taking a medication for 22 years doesn’t mean that it’s safe for you. People are all made up differently, so you COULD still have those potential reactions.

Unfortunately, there is not a lot you can do to reduce the development of resistance. I am assuming you are using benzaclin which is a combination of benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin. There are reports of clindamycin resistance occurring in the bacteria that is responsible for acne. However, benzoyl peroxide is still effective even if the antibiotic portion does not provide additional help. If your acne started to develop resistance, you can also swap to other products that use different antibiotics to kill the bacteria.

Q&A: Question about antibiotics for acne and birth control?
Question by nickie: Question about antibiotics for acne and birth control?
If I take the antibiotic I’m using that clears my acne while I’m on birth control, and don’t have sex for the first few months, then stop taking the antibiotic, will my face still be clear since birth control helps with acne also? (like yaz)? then i can have sex while on birth control and not worry about the antibiotic decreasing the effectiveness.

yes, probably but when you go into the doctor to get your antibiotic (or birth control) ask her. All birth control (the pill) will clear up acne.

Acne after Antibiotics?
Question by jonny j: Acne after Antibiotics?
I’ve been taking an antibiotic for my acne and will be sure to wean down the amount before I stop completely. I’ve heard that after antibiotics acne is even worse than before. Is this true? Is it possible to remain clear? What would you recommend I do? Answers will be greatly appreciated!

From my own experience, you will want to go on a great skincare line after. See what works best for you to keep your skin nice and clear. Benzoyl Peroxide in heavy doses works best for me! And be sure to wean yourself off of the antibiotic under the care of your Doctors supervision. Ask whoever prescribed you the antibiotic what they would recommend once you are done. Good Luck!!

Are there any “pregnancy-safe” oral antibiotics for acne?
Question by : Are there any “pregnancy-safe” oral antibiotics for acne?
The ONLY thing that has ever gotten rid of my acne (cursed with it for over ten years) is Minocycline; however, I’m planning on getting pregnant soon. I don’t want to risk any harm to the baby, but I don’t want my acne to come back. I had a severe case – constant breakouts of large, painful nodules all over my face, back, and chest – in uncountable numbers.
